Celebrating Fascination of Plants Day With Middle School Students at Carnegie Plant Biology
Middle School students from the Children’s Day School in San Francisco spent the afternoon with plants learning about how they shape our past, present, and the future. Students met Teosinte, a wild grass thought to be the ancestor of Maize. A hands-on demonstration by Margaret Bezrutczyk revealed how maize was domesticated. Heike Lindner and Jacob Moe-Lange used interactive methods to showcase their latest research in plant biology. Middle school students got to know rare succulents through a highly sought after collection of Hawarthia with George Theodoris, a local Hawarthia collector. The students then toured plant research greenhouses, growth chambers, as well as the native plant garden on the Carnegie Plant Biology grounds.
